Welcome Notes

June 11-14, 2011

On behalf of the McGuinty government, I am pleased to extend greetings to everyone attending the Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference.

Ontario is honoured to host this annual convergence of scientists, filmmakers, industry leaders and business minds supporting the development of stereoscopic 3D. This one–of–a–kind conference is an indispensable forum where the future of S3D production will be charted.

Our government values the important economic and cultural contributions that art, entertainment and cinema make to our communities. We are committed to working together with artists and the industry to ensure this sector continues to grow.

I applaud York University and 3D FLIC for working to ensure the success of this event by bringing together the best and brightest in celebration of a ‘new era in 3D cinema’.

I am pleased to welcome everyone visiting from outside of Ontario and Canada. I hope you will take advantage of the wealth of entertainment options available to you in Toronto, and throughout the province, during your visit.

Please accept my best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable conference.

Yours truly,

Michael Chan

The Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference is an interdisciplinary international gathering designed to address and analyze what is being hailed as “a new era in 3D cinema.” Not only has stereoscopic 3D (S3D) cinema broken all box office records, but S3D cinema and related media (from television to video games and cell phones) represents a new development in global screen cultures and communications technologies. The S3D Conference will bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners to uncover the new aesthetic and technical grammar of S3D Cinema. In so doing, the Conference will also recognize the Canadian contributions to this technology by focusing on the pioneers of this medium as well as leading 3D filmmakers.

While most conferences devoted to S3D media are “boot camps” designed for industry producers and technicians, emphasizing basic technology and surface histories, the Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference brings together a group of leading researchers, film professionals, film scholars and artists to consider both the past and the future of this medium. The Conference will lay the foundation for an international research consortium devoted to S3D Cinema and media, and the presentations will result in a landmark edited collection of papers devoted to the new era of S3D media.

On behalf of the Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference organizers and 3D FLIC we welcome you to this exceptional event.

Best wishes,

Juana Awad
